In the Russian Orthodox Church, the Gospels are revered in the same way as an icon, and are always bound in metal. The front board is decorated with enamel roundels of Christ and the four Evangelists. The opening pages of St John’s Gospel show tangible evidence of use – drops of wax on the page.
