FRANZ XAVER WINTERHALTER (1805-73)

Queen Victoria with the Prince of Wales

Signed and dated 1846

RCIN 406945

The Prince of Wales is depicted wearing his Russian-style shirt, presumably a gift from a visiting member the Russian imperial family. This was not the first occasion such a garment was worn: on 8 October, 1843 Queen Victoria recorded that the Prince, aged nearly two, ‘appeared in his new Blouse, which he is always to wear now … It is in fact a Russian dress.’

Commissioned by Queen Victoria as a gift for Sir Robert Peel; purchased by Queen Mary, 1939
