FRANZ XAVER WINTERHALTER (1805-73)

Prince Alfred (1844-1900), later Duke of Edinburgh

Signed and dated 1865

RCIN 404833

Painted eight years before his marriage to Maria Alexandrovna, Winterhalter captures a youthful gleam in the sitter’s eyes. It forms one of a group of portraits completed at The Rosenau, Coburg, while on a family holiday. There are indications that the portrait was speedily done, yet the draughtsmanship appears effortless.

Commissioned by Queen Victoria.
