This portrait of Catherine II’s son is after a lost original, painted soon after his accession. Recent conservation has revealed the quality of the copy, particularly the sensitively painted face and the dark green hues of the uniform of the Preobrazhensky regiment.

Acquired by Queen Victoria, 1848–9.
