Queen Victoria received this portrait just before her son’s marriage to the sitter in St Petersburg. She praised the likeness as ‘beautiful and quite worthy of a Winterhalter’. On the day of the wedding she recorded in her Journal how the picture was ‘surrounded by a wreath of evergreens & some orange flowers, tied with bows of the Russian colours’.
