The coronation portrait of Catherine the Great is a statement of magnificence and power. She stands on a porphyry dais, holding the symbols of imperial power – the orb and sceptre. The newly commissioned Coronation crown is set with diamonds and a magnificent red spinel.

Presumably a gift to George III or George IV, when Prince of Wales, c.1813
