Box with profile portrait of Peter the Great (1672-1725)

The finely carved profile portrait in the form of a Renaissance medallion depicts Peter the Great in antique armour. The creation of this western European image of the Russian ruler in the antique tradition legitimised Peter’s image as an enlightened ruler.

Given to King George V by Queen Mary, 1932.
