Beaker

Silver beakers, in Russian known as stakany, were made in large numbers from the eighteenth century onwards for use by nobles and merchants who wished to emulate the dining practises of the imperial court. The beakers were predominantly made in Moscow, the centre for silversmiths where labour was less expensive. They are often decorated with embossed designs incorporating allegorical scenes derived from the volume Symbola et Emblemata, published under Peter the Great’s instruction in 1705.
