SIR JOSEPH EDGAR BOEHM, 1ST BARONET (1834-90)

Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh (1844-1900)

1879

RCIN 31620

The bust is dated five years after the marriage of Alfred and Maria Alexandrovna, while Alfred was still Duke of Edinburgh and before he acceded to the title of Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha in 1893. The Duke’s naval uniform and the modelling of his features are finely observed by Boehm, whom Queen Victoria appointed her Sculptor in Ordinary in 1881.

Probably commissioned by Queen Victoria.
