COPY AFTER HEINRICH VON ANGELI (1840-1925)

Alexander II, Emperor of Russia (1818- 1881)

c.1881-84

RCIN 404903

This pair of portraits of the Empress and Emperor was painted for Queen Victoria after works now in the Hermitage Museum. The Empress, described by Queen Victoria 1874 as ‘very tall, very ladylike & amiable … with a sad expression’, was of a fragile disposition, having suffered from tuberculosis for many years. On last meeting the Emperor in May 1874 the Queen was concerned by his appearance, describing him as ‘so old, sad and careworn.’

Commissioned by Queen Victoria.
