GEORGE HOUSMAN THOMAS (1824-68)

Sketch for the painting of ‘The Marriage of the Prince and Princess of Wales’

drawn March 1863

Pencil, pen and ink, watercolour, bodycolour | 23.5 x 30.7 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 914144

The marriage ceremony took place on 10 March 1863 in St George’s Chapel, Windsor. This smaller, less public, venue was particularly chosen by Queen Victoria who was still in mourning following the death of Prince Albert less than two years before. Dressed in black, she watched the ceremony from the privacy of the Edward IV Chantry immediately above the high altar.
