ROGER FENTON (1819-69)

Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, Buckingham Palace

11 May 1854

Albumen print | 20.4 x 16.2 cm (print) (image) | RCIN 2906513

Often mistaken for a wedding photograph, this shows Queen Victoria and Prince wearing court dress in 1854, fourteen years after their wedding. At the time of their marriage in 1840 photographic techniques were not fully developed and still required inordinately long exposure times. However, photography soon became a popular and accessible medium and was widely used at the weddings of their nine children.
