The Tartars settled in the Crimea in the mid-thirteenth century during the expansion of the Mongol Empire. In the Crimea the group gradually incorporated other diverse ethnic peoples, becoming defined by their adoption of Islam and use of a Turkic language. During the Crimean War, thousands of Tartars fled the Crimea for the Islamic Ottoman Empire, following Russian persecution. Those who remained sided with the allies.
