ROGER FENTON (1819-69)

Nubian servants with horses

27 Apr 1855

RCIN 2500416

These servants were from a region of North Africa known as Nubia in the 1850s, today encompassing south Egypt and much of Sudan. At the time of the Crimean War the region was part of the Ottoman Empire. The servants, who were engaged by army officers, appear in a number of Fenton’s photographs, perhaps chosen because the Victorian audience would have been unfamiliar with their appearance.
