ROGER FENTON (1819-69)

Group of Croats

Mar 1855

RCIN 2500422

As well as photographing different regiments of the British and allied armies, Fenton photographed the diverse ethnic groups present in the Crimea at the time of the war. He made several studies of Croats, some of which were published in The Illustrated London News.

Fenton was pleased with this photograph, and sent a copy from the Crimea to his wife, asking her to show it to Prince Albert's librarian, Dr Ernst Becker. That photograph is today in one of Prince Albert's albums.
