JAMES ROBERTSON (1813-88)

Fort Nicholas

1855-1856

RCIN 2500759

In September 1855 the Crimean War drew to a close with the fall of the city of Sevastopol to the British and allied armies. Shortly afterwards Robertson travelled to Sevastopol to photograph the fallen city. This photograph shows Fort Nicholas, the principle fortification which had defended Sevastopol harbour.

Robertson captured the final chapter of the war, which happened after Fenton had left the Crimea. His photographs, however, failed to engage with the British public.
