EDWARD UPTON (ACTIVE 1855)
Colin Campbell, Lord Clyde (1792-1863)
c. 1855-60RCIN 420868
Fenton’s photograph of Sir Colin Campbell (displayed towards the beginning of the exhibition) was copied and adapted for this miniature painting. The position of the left arm has been altered, and the sword has been moved to Campbell’s right hand. Artists would often make use of photographs to ensure accuracy. During the 1850s, relatively early in the history of photography, this was seen as a positive act as it was felt basing an image on a photograph promised not just accuracy but objective truthfulness.
