LOUIS HAGHE (1806-85)

Queen Victoria in costume for the 1745 Fancy Ball, 6 June 1845

dated 1845

Watercolour and bodycolour over pencil | 27.6 x 19.8 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 913347

A watercolour of a full-length standing figure, facing right, holding a fan, in an interior, probably the Throne Room. Queen Victoria’s costume for the 1845 Bal Costumé was made by the royal dressmakers M. and Mlle Vouillon et Laure. The Queen was so delighted with the dress that she commissioned a number of portraits of herself wearing it, as well as sketching it in her Journal. Text adapted from Victoria & Albert: Art & Love, London, 2010
