SIR EDWIN LANDSEER (1803-73)

Queen Victoria and Prince Albert at the Bal Costumé of 12 May 1842

1842-46

Oil on canvas | 143.0 x 111.6 cm (support, canvas/panel/str external) | RCIN 404540

For the first of her costume balls, Victoria specified that the costumes must be made of Spitalfields silk.

The Times noted that the ball caused an ‘extraordinary improvement’ to the struggling weaving industry, with over 200 additional looms employed and a new style of silk-weaving developed.
