The return of the Guards from the Crimea, outside Buckingham Palace, 9 July 1856

On 9 July the three battalions of Guards who had returned from the Crimea marched from Pall Mall to Buckingham Palace where the royal family had gathered on the balcony. Queen Victoria recorded that ‘The worn and tattered colours were amazingly spontaneously cheered, several being crowned with laurels and flowers’.
