Vincent Apap, the sculptor of this bronze bust of the Duke of Edinburgh, was born in Valletta, Malta. He became internationally known as a portrait sculptor, able to work at great speed. His sitters have included The Queen, the Prince of Wales and Sir Winston Churchill. Prince Philip met Apap through Viscount Mountbatten when he was serving in Malta with the Royal Navy in 1950.
