Prince Philip’s career in the Royal Navy continued after the war. In February 1947, Prince Philip became a naturalised British subject, renouncing his Greek royal title and adopting his maternal grandfather’s surname, Mountbatten. At the time of his engagement to Princess Elizabeth in July 1947, he was instructing cadets at the petty officer training school HMS Royal Arthur in Corsham, Wiltshire.
