This is a preparatory study for Her Majesty The Queen receiving The Honours of Scotland, which hangs on the Great Stair at the Palace of Holyroodhouse. Prince Philip, wearing the uniform of a Field Marshall, is in the centre of the painting. Cursiter was appointed as the King’s (later Queen’s) Limner and Painter in Scotland in 1948, by George VI, and held the position until his death in 1976.
