Science and Industry, Sport and Scotland
Prince Philip’s solo engagements in the United Kingdom were often in support of science, engineering, industry and the armed forces. A selection of gifts from these engagements are displayed here. The Prince was also an active sportsman and his patronages often reflected his own sporting pursuits and the governing bodies behind events such as the Olympic and Commonwealth Games.
As Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Philip had a natural affinity with Scotland and its capital. He carried out many engagements in Scotland. In 1953 he was appointed Chancellor of the University of Edinburgh, a position he occupied for nearly 60 years. During this time he promoted the work of the University and provided encouragement to students and staff.
