Art and Collecting

Prince Philip was an enthusiastic collector of art and acquired many paintings over his lifetime. On their marriage Prince Philip and Princess Elizabeth decided they would like works by contemporary artists to hang on the walls of their own rooms and many pictures were acquired for particular residences. On his regular visits to Scotland, Prince Philip purchased numerous paintings from the Royal Scottish Academy in Edinburgh to hang in the private apartments of the Palace of Holyroodhouse. He also collected the work of Australian artists, such as Sidney Nolan, after several visits to the country.
