JAN DE BRAY (HAARLEM C. 1627-HAARLEM 1697)

The Banquet of Cleopatra

Signed and dated 1652

RCIN 404756

This is essentially a family portrait. De Bray depicts his parents in the roles of the Roman general Mark Antony and the Egyptian Queen Cleopatra. Cleopatra is about to dissolve her pearl earring in a glass of vinegar to win a bet with her lover as to who can throw the most extravagant banquet. De Bray shows his parents surrounded by their many children and, on the left, includes his own self-portrait, dressed as a soldier and holding a halberd.
