Samuel Drummond worked as a portrait painter before achieving success in the field of naval and history painting. Here, the artist appears in his studio, surrounded by the accoutrements of his profession. His most successful naval subject The Death of Nelson is displayed on an easel while on the right, where the light is most flattering, a platform and chair have been set up for portrait sittings.
