Anton Graff was one of the leading portrait painters in eighteenth-century Germany. His output also included over 100 self-portraits. In this much-replicated example, Graff presents himself in his dual role of artist and nobleman: the paint brushes, palette and canvas point to his profession while the rich red coat and solemn expression attest to his status and intellect.
