EDUARD JAKOB VON STEINLE (1810-86)

Saint Luke painting the Virgin

Signed and dated 1851

RCIN 408952

According to Christian tradition, St Luke the Evangelist painted an icon of the Virgin and Child. Many surviving versions are claimed to be the original miraculous image. St Luke was subsequently adopted as the patron saint of artists, with many guilds and academies across Europe dedicated to his name. The Austrian artist Eduard Steinle was linked to the Nazarenes, a group of artists who sought to revive medieval and early Renaissance artists' techniques and subjects.
