FOLLOWER OF RAPHAEL (URBINO 1483-ROME 1520)

Portrait of a Man

c. 1506-13

RCIN 405760

When presented to George III in 1781 by the 3rd Earl Cowper this was described as a self-portrait by Raphael, an identification based on inscriptions on the buttons of the cloak, a general resemblance to other known likenesses of the artist and the sitter's direct gaze. Recent examination however has questioned this identification and it now not believed to be either painted by or a portrait of Raphael.
