Michael Rysbrack was the leading sculptor of tombs and portrait busts in England. Here he is shown gesturing to a classical bust while holding a pair of dividers, implying that he took the Antique as his inspiration and guide. But his informal dress proclaimed that he was also at ease in the modern world, and indeed his portrait busts could be either faithfully classical in style or strikingly naturalistic.
