CARLO CESARE MALVASIA (1616-93)

Felsina pittrice : Vite di pittori bolognesi ; t. 1 / da Co. Carlo Cesare Malvasia.

1678

RCIN 1151359

Felsina was the Etruscan name for Bologna, and pittrice is a female painter; the title of Malvasia's collection of biographies thus conveys the idea of an artistic spirit or genius particular to the city. The heroes of his account were the Carracci, whom Malvasia believed to have rescued Bolognese painting from the stagnation of Mannerism.
