AFTER SIR WILLIAM BEECHEY (1753-1839)

David Wilkie

dated 1810

RCIN 663893

David Wilkie was only 24- years old when this mezzotint was published, yet he was already a celebrated artist, following the success of his paintings The Village Politicians and The Blind Fiddler at the Royal Academy. The print reproduces a painted portrait by Sir William Beechey, Wilkie's keenest promoter in his early years in London, and was no doubt intended to advertise the urbanity of the young Scot.
