JAN STEEN (LEIDEN 1626-LEIDEN 1679)

Cardplayers in a Tavern

c.1664

RCIN 404576

The figures in this scene have traditionally been identified in inventories as Jan Steen himself - who had a short-lived secondary career running a brewery in Delft - and his artistic compatriots Philips Wouwerman (1619-1668) and Egbert van Heemskerck (1634-1704). While there is little evidence to support these identifications, Steen did often insert his own self-portraits into his scenes of everyday life, usually laughing along with the transgressors around him.
