VALENTINE GREEN (1739–1813) AFTER MARIA COSWAY (C.1759/60–1838)

A self-portrait of Maria Cosway

1787

RCIN 653011

Cosway depicts herself with her arms crossed, an unusual and assertive pose. Her elegant dress is offset by the large cross on a black ribbon around her neck, a prominent reference to her strong Catholic faith. Cosway makes no reference to her practice as a painter: she simply presents herself as a confident and accomplished young woman.
