ROSALBA GIOVANNA CARRIERA (VENICE 1675-VENICE 1757)

A self-portrait

c. 1745

RCIN 452375

This is the final self-portrait of Rosalba Carriera, executed shortly before the onset of blindness in 1746, and probably produced as a gift to her friend Joseph Smith, the British Consul in Venice who was also a major patron and collector. The lack of affectation and subdued palette of this self-portrait suggest a respect for Smith's sophisticated taste.
