SAMUEL WILLIAM REYNOLDS (1773–1835) AFTER SIR JOSHUA REYNOLDS (1723-92)

A self-portrait of Sir Joshua Reynolds

1795

RCIN 641025

This mezzotint reproduces a self-portrait painted 50 years earlier, when Reynolds was in his mid-twenties. His dynamic pose is strongly foreshortened and lit by a striking pattern of light and dark. This was one of a glut of prints of self-portraits by Reynolds published in the years following his death, a phenomenon of which the inveterate self-publicist would no doubt have approved.
