ELISABETTA SIRANI (1638-65)

A self-portrait

RCIN 906360

Elisabetta Sirani was practising as a professional painter by the age of 17 and took over the workshop of her father Giovanni Andrea at 24. Her fame grew rapidly, and even during her short lifetime her works were sought by collectors across Europe. Several self-portraits are known, of which this is the earliest, showing Elisabetta as an assured young artist in her mid- or even early teens.
