This memorial ode to Charles II, Threnodia Augustalis, was written on the King’s death in 1685. The title refers to a threnody, or classical song of mourning, and compares Charles II to the Roman Emperor Augustus. The poem mourns the loss of Charles II, as well as celebrating the succession of James VII and II. Acquired by George III
