Carol Ann Duffy first read this poem at An Observance for Commonwealth Day at Westminster Abbey on 14 March 2011. The service was attended by Her Majesty The Queen, who is Head of the Commonwealth. The poem pays tribute to the women and girls of the countries of the Commonwealth.
