HM Queen Elizabeth II (b. 1926)

26 - 26 Feb 1952

Gelatin silver print | 20.7 x 15.8 cm (image) | RCIN 2509008

Profile portraits of the new Queen were required for use on coinage and banknotes, commissioned by the Royal Mint. The positioning of The Queen’s head was important because of the convention that monarchs should be depicted on currency in the opposite profile to that of their predecessor, but Wilding experimented by taking photographs in profile from both sides. Images from this group were used for the design of postage stamps in Commonwealth realms.
