This presentation copy of Francis Bacon’s essay 'Of Gardens' (1625) was created for Queen Alexandra. Sangorski’s calligraphic text is contained within gold-edged illuminated ornamental borders of floral and foliate design, and embellished with three miniatures showing garden scenes at the height of summer. These watercolour vignettes may have been intended as loose interpretations of the gardens at Sandringham House.
