There were striking parallels between nineteenth-century England and seventeenth-century Holland in the importing and cultivation of exotics and the swift development of a bourgeois culture of gardening. Surprisingly, however, there was no corresponding rise in England of a native school of flower painters. As a result, the French artist Henri Fantin-Latour found a receptive market for his flower paintings in London from the 1860s to the 1890s.
