Böttner presents the famous gardens at Wilhelmshöhe, Kassel, as an allegory of good order and governance within the family and the state. Here Wilhelm IX, Landgrave of Hesse-Cassel can choose between the hard road of duty, represented by the rocky path on the left, and the life of ease and pleasure represented by the women and their pastimes on the right.
