CYRIL WARD (1863-1935)

The Pergola in the East Garden, Sandringham

circa 1912

RCIN 452865

This watercolour was drawn for Ward’s volume on Royal Gardens, published in 1912. It shows the approach to the new kitchen garden at Sandringham, with a massive pergola swathed in roses, honeysuckle and clematis. In the centre of the pergola is a decorative wellhead and to the right can be glimpsed one of the magnificent apsidal marble benches designed by Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema in 1909. The benches remain in the East Garden, although only the brick pillars of the pergola have survived.
