Charles de l’Écluse (Carolus Clusius) was the most influential botanist of his time. The engraving on the title page of his complete works pays tribute to two of the founding fathers of the science of botany: Theophrastus, depicted on the left, and Dioscorides on the right. Adam, the first gardener, and Solomon, who personifies wisdom and science, are also represented. The frontispage illustrates some of the new plant species which Clusius helped to disseminate throughout Europe. These include the crown imperial (upper right) and the tulip (centre).
