WILLIAM LEIGHTON LEITCH (1804-83)

Osborne House from below the terrace

Aug 1851

RCIN 919847

The gardens at Osborne House, laid out in accordance with Prince Albert’s plans, reflected the latest in Victorian gardening style. Leitch’s watercolour shows the profusion of mass-produced garden sculpture which adorned the new terracing. At the base of the steps are two lions created in artificial stone by the English firm Austin & Seely, based on casts from the Medici lions in the Loggia dei Lanzi, Florence.
