STUDIO OF MARCO RICCI (BELLUNO 1676-VENICE 1730)

A View of the Cascade, Bushy Park Water Gardens

c.1715

RCIN 402592

George, Prince of Wales, and Caroline of Ansbach can be identified in the group of figures on the right, visiting the water gardens created for Lord Halifax in Bushy Park near Hampton Court in 1710. However, it is the cascade itself, rather than its royal visitors, which is the focus of this painting. The artist delights in the glittering play of light on the cascade and lower pool, and in the reflections of the trees in the upper pool. The pleasing angularity of the basin is emphasised by the sanded walk around it.
