One of the most important landscape gardens of the eighteenth century was at Claremont in Surrey. The garden was designed by Sir John Vanbrugh and Charles Bridgeman for Sir Thomas Pelham-Holles, 1st Duke of Newcastle. Claremont’s most impressive feature was the large-scale terraced amphitheatre which provides the focus for this print.
