The most successful Dutch flower-painter, Simon Verelst, settled in London in 1669. A Bunch of Grapes dates from soon after the artist’s arrival in England. The decorative and the symbolic merge in this painting where the illuminated Large White butterfly and the withered vine-leaves bearing the spores of fungal rust remind the viewer of the passing of the seasons and the transitory nature of life.
